a different perspective

sometimes you have to look at things from all angles.

sometimes the best approach makes the least amount of sense.

sometimes the back is more interesting than the front.

sometimes old is better than new.

sometimes withered is a state of mind.

sometimes light is precious.

sometimes all the opening happens at the end.

it’s a winter wonderland, again

Last week it was quite warm and almost all the snow melted. This past weekend, almost all of it was replaced. My two outdoor kitties are not so happy, they had so much fun running around out there are those two warm days, and now they are stuck inside once again. Not stuck, exactly, because they can go out if they want, but they go to the door I hold open, peek out and then turn around and go back where it’s nice and warm. Or they go out for five minutes and then want to come right back inside.

I can hardly blame them, we all have a bit of Spring Fever these days.
The good news is that Spring is just one month away.

And so, in honor of that, and to continue our one year Blog Birthday celebration, it is time for another giveaway! Hey, a girl has to
cheer herself up somehow. And no, it’s not a kitten.

This time it’s a free 8×10 print of your choice from my etsy shop.

some days

are easy and it all just falls into place.

other days, everything is off kilter, out of whack, takes longer than it should.

these are the days that challenge, make us weary, make us question,
make us weep.

and yet, these are the days we have to work with.

and so, i admire my faded valentine.

i smile at an upside down kitten.

i accept this headache that has become my companion.

for today.

tonight i will dream of a meadow filled with sunshine

and tomorrow will be a different shade.

drifting along

February, I will love you if it kills me.

Love the snow and the cold and the grey and the ice and even the slippery. Love the shortness of days that creep towards longer, bumping into obstacles, often. Love the bare and the stark, and the black silhouette of web and lace against a sky of no color.

The tall, tawny grasses peeking out from beneath their white blanket, bending in the wind that blows through them. The stillness of an evening filled with gently falling snow, giant cotton ball flakes in no hurry to reach their destination. The night with no wind, just me and the sky and all this white.

I will love the blizzard in its rage, all furious and frenzied, knocking at my door, let me in, in, in. Love the snow caps and the drifts, the boots and the shovels. And I will embrace these muted tones of grey on white, black on blue, beige on beige.

Because I know that beneath you, February, spring lies in wait. I like to picture her there, smiling in her dress of green, getting ready for the party.

Flower seeds round her neck, roots as her hair, warmth as her bracelet.

one year, two hearts

One year ago today I started this blog with a post called on getting a grip.

I had no idea whatsoever what I was doing, I had a couple of dreams in my pocket and all these words in my mind and a graphic design and jewelry business to maintain.

It’s been a wonderful ride, this past year. A few of the dreams even came true, being published in Artful Blogging was certainly one of them. Writing again was another. And photography, another still. It has been a year of fulfillment. Those two hands are still here, working away everyday at creating something.

A life. An artist. A writer.

This space has become a part of who I am.

Thank you all for reading and for listening and encouraging and supporting.

From the bottom of my heart.

Which brings me to our next giveaway. Because we love you, two hearts…

These earrings were made by my sister, Conni, my partner in my jewelry business. She’s a bit camera-shy and so I don’t talk about her all that much here, but she is as much a part of Blue Muse Jewelry as I am. I heart her. And we heart you…

Each heart measures 3/8 inch by 1/2 inch and is handmade from precious metal clay, all other metal is sterling silver.

the little things

It’s a heat wave today, 40 degrees, which seriously feels like warmth. It really is all relative, isn’t it?

There is still a lot of snow on the ground, and I’m sure there is more yet to come, but the late afternoon light has changed again ever-so-slightly, throwing shadows of spring in long, slanting lines across the snowdrifts. The fact that I have noticed this also means that we’ve had sunshine, and sunshine has a way of changing everything.

Yesterday, my husband had planned to take me out to dinner for Valentine’s Day, but then I had a migraine and it was really, really cold and really, really windy and in the end, we made a fire and ate leftover pizza. We watched some movies and we read, me still reading Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls, my husband reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski, which was my second-favorite book of last year. Maybe even my favorite.

I spent the day on the couch with a migraine, but somehow I was happy, content to be quiet and do these simple things, resting and relaxing, with my husband at my side.

I was forced to slow down and do nothing. But it wasn’t really nothing at all.

It was a series of little things that added up to be a pretty good day.

celebrating with giveaway #2!

I am celebrating big-time this month!

My blog’s birthday is coming up real soon (February 16th), I was just published in Artful Blogging magazine, I love you all, and hey, it’s February and I needed something to cheer me up! (Don’t we all???)

For my second giveaway of the month
(you can find the first one here, it’s open until February 17th)

I am offering this cute little necklace called

When Winter Turns to Spring

On the front is a pattern that reminds me of a snowflake…

and on the reverse, a fun flower pattern…

The necklace measures 18 inches long and has a 2 inch extender chain for adjustable length, and the pendant itself measures 5/8 inch across. The pendant is handmade by me from precious metal clay, all other metal is sterling silver, and the pretty periwinkle accent beads are swarovski crystal.
