witch hazel

you have to love a flower
that lets its hair down

bedhead blowing in the wind style

without even taking time
to get dressed

naked wild unabashed bearer of spring

riding into town on flailing branches
all spurs a-jangling and arms akimbo

because you just know

she’s having fun

a girl can dream

Every time I visit the Longwood Gardens conservatories in March, I want to hide out somewhere until everyone leaves and take up residence.

I admit, seeing all that color makes me giddy, but, it could work, right? It’s always warm, there are soft lawns to sleep on, and even fruit growing on the trees. What more could a girl need?

I’d even be willing to work for my keep, dead-heading, watering, pruning, talking to the plants, whatever.

So, if ever I cannot be found… now you know where to look.

But if you see me, don’t blow my cover, okay?

.

Wishing you a week filled with whispers of spring.

a flower made from sky

This is my favorite photo from last year’s trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show and Longwood Gardens.

One of the greenhouses at Longwood always features the famous Himalayan Blue Poppies, and they are nothing short of magical.

It has been a tough week, and I can’t wait to spend some time giggling with one of my best friends.

There will probably be snorting involved as well.

We usually laugh so much that everyone else on the bus gives us funny looks.

Of course, that never stops us.

.

Wishing you a weekend filled with laughter and blue skies.

one tired tulip

I feel just like this bloom that has decided to rest
its weary head on the windowsill.

What a week.

But there is a bit of sunshine.

The air outside is beginning to smell of spring.

And even in its exhaustion, this flower is reaching for the light.

on showing up

Busy work kept me busy all weekend, work I am grateful for, work that keeps me showing up despite the undeniable urge to crawl into bed and read and read and read.

The sun has been peeking out more and more often, the light is slowly changing from winter pattern to spring promise, I am still filled with more questions than answers, and life goes on.

I need to go running.  I know that part of my grumpiness would be cured by that. It was too cold for me this weekend, only in the 20s, but perhaps this week will offer the chance.

And I am grateful for grocery store flowers.

They also keep showing up, small bunches of spring that I can’t pass by, and I feel lucky that these days they are so affordable.

I am here, I am busy, I have flowers, and outside, the wind is howling.

Wait.

I am here, I am busy, and I have flowers.

That will be enough.

recycling

Last year’s sunshine from last year’s trip to Longwood Gardens.

Next weekend, I’m going back there, as well as to the
Philadelphia Flower Show. This trip always fills my heart with enough
spring to get me through the rest of winter. (Or at least it helps.)

I have a busy, busy weekend ahead of me catching up on lots of work,
and for this, I am grateful.

It’s snowing again, but it’s March and it’s Friday and I have
pretty photos to look at.

And optimism blooms in tiny, tentative steps.

So, there’s that.

when spring is just a dream

dancing, twirling, slowly spinning into focus

hints of gold in a cold blue sky

whispers of new growth, brighter days, shorter nights

earth turning

seed sprouting

sun beaming

pour me a cup of sunshine

I am still struggling with the grey of this February,
but at least March has moved into view.

Promises of sunshine and garden planning add a bright spot,
as will a trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show.

This month never fails to trip me up a little, but there is tea,
and there is tomorrow, and a bit of sugar will sweeten things up.

Care to join me?

.

Wishing you a week filled with sunshine.
