JEWELRY

the mockingbird’s breakfast

All week I have been marveling at these rose hips, mostly at the fact that
somehow, this rosebush still has green leaves, the only green in a garden
now turned brown and grey.

It’s almost like the leaves have been freeze dried.

All week I’ve been meaning to get out there for a photo, and this morning I donned my winter garb and marched through the several inches of snow we now have to finally take a picture. As I stood there, my mockingbird friend came and landed just to my left, for a breakfast of rose hips and winter green.

Then I understood.

He has enchanted this patch, his own bright spot of everyday magic.

And I was enchanted by the fact that he landed just three feet from my arm. Then again, it was a very cold night and he is probably very hungry.

I took some photos of him but they are nothing special,
too many branches in the way.

But the moment, that was special. Another gift from my garden.

A gem.

November really is the color of gratitude.

enchanted, indeed. and gorgeous – i can just see that mockingbird waiting for you to leave, tapping his toe. just wonderful.

There were loads of rosehips when I visited home in October. Every time I saw them I smiled at the memories of using them as itching powder as a kid!
