counting days with stars and scars

i think of silence as birdsong

the recognition that nature is held out by walls and in by skin

and we can only watch what happens

on a morning when sunlight

exists

July 4, 2014

red, white, and blue

The other evening, after another hot, hot day, I went outside to sit in my garden for a bit, just to escape the air conditioning. Which sounds all backwards, I know, but I miss having the windows open, even as I appreciate the coolness.

As I sat there, this hot air balloon flew directly over my head. I didn’t even notice it was up there until I heard that flame-throwing sound, and I looked up to see it right above me. It scared my dog, which made me laugh, and my husband wondered if it was having problems, because it was flying pretty low.

I told him a ride in a hot air balloon is one of the things on my bucket list. Some day.

On this day, it’s just right for wishing you a Happy 4th of July, the day that, for me, marks the true beginning of summer.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, filled with all the things you love best, and a lovely surprise, or two.

sunshine on my shoulders

It smells like autumn.

I’m working my way through the garden, not quite ready to shut things down for the winter, but tidying up just the same.

Inside, I am doing the same, September has been a month of crossing things off my list, some of which have been on there all summer. It feels good to accomplish these small tasks, feels good to lift that tiny weight off my shoulders.

Of course, there will be new things added, soon, firewood to stack and storm windows to wash and close.

But not yet.

The sun is shining, the air is crisp, and my to-do list never manages to be finished.

And so I stop and sit and turn my face to the sky. Sunshine warms my shoulders and I am grateful for this moment.

Small blessings taste the sweetest.

Savor.

.

Wishing you a Wednesday filled with sunshine.

colored sugar

Summer is winding down, flowers are fading, leaves are changing ever-so-slightly.

The month of August was simply perfect weather-wise, though if you were to ask the cucumbers and tomatoes, they might say “brrrr.” And so, fewer tomatoes than usual. Not enough cucumbers for making pickles. Sigh.

But the black-eyed susans had a banner year, as did the Kiss Me Over the Garden Gate. I swear I have a forest of it out there, towering over my head and making me smile. I’ve yet to take a picture that shows it off properly, though I keep trying.

Life is a flurry of activity and I am a busy bee with graphics work, a new photo technique class, and jewelry creating.

Let’s hope that in the end, I’ve made some honey.

.

Wishing you a week filled with sweetness.

pretty in pink

It was a mellow weekend, summer-lazy, rainy and sunny, filled with friends and books, gardening and catching up on chores and life.

Simple. And lately, that is all that I need.

Less stuff, more life.

Enjoying the moment.

Soaking up the sun.

Running in the rain.

Bird watching and star gazing.

Fresh vegetables for dinner, corn from the stand right around the corner.

Freckles and barefeet.

Summer.

Simple.

.

Wishing you a week filled with sun and simple.

the wind in your hair

My internet was out for the last three days… and while it was a major inconvenience as far as work is concerned, it was also kind of nice.

I felt myself slowing down, just a little. My routine was no longer routine, and since we also had beautiful weather, I spent a lot of time outside. I took this picture last week, planning to post it on Saturday, which, of course, never happened.  Since then, all of the black eyed susans have opened. What a happy flower they are.

Yesterday I wrote all morning, went running, worked in the garden, had a nice dinner with my husband, and then read all evening. It was pretty much a perfect day.

Sometimes, things work out just exactly the way they are supposed to.

I think this was one of those times.

It was a space filled with quiet, and I don’t give that to myself often enough. You get so used to all the chatter that you stop thinking about it, but it’s always there.

Sometimes, you just have to stand still and let the wind blow through your hair.

It’s refreshing.

Wishing you a week filled with quiet.

July 12, 2013

day tripper

Summer is just flying by, and I am squeezing as much living out of it as I can. Reading, enjoying sunsets, breathing in flowers, dining al fresco, watching thunderstorms roll by.

There is much to be done (as evidenced by the weeds crawling up through the daylilies) but I pull myself away from it all to enjoy these golden days as much as possible.

There will always be weeds. Floors will always need sweeping, jewelry needs making, wood needs repainting. It’s all there on my list, waiting for my attention.

But who can turn away from that light and that perfect sky and and these flowers that live so briefly?

And so I sit, watching, listening, absorbing, relaxing.

Basking.

Now there’s a word for you.

.

Wishing you a weekend filled with time and light.
